KALAGAN is one of the 13 Muslim tribes of Mindanao in the Philippines. Its people are scattered around Davao Region particularly Davao City, Tagum City, Panabo City, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Compostella Valley, and Island Garden City of Samal. It has been recounted that each of the four major areas of Davao (Davao City, Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur) was before had its own native ruler called DATU. The famous of those is DATU BAGO of Davao City.
Some members of the tribe are preferred to be called as "Kagan" rather than Kalagan. According to some this is an original term for Kalagan. KAGAN was before a large group of native people in Davao. There were stories have been told that some LUMADS (Highlanders) like KAMAYO, MANDAYA, MANSAKA, KALLAW (Isamal), TAGAKAULO were belonged to KAGAN Tribe. The KAGAN tribe just got divided into smaller groups when the two religions, ISLAM and CHRISTIANITY introduced to them. Paganism was practiced by the tribe before these two religions came to light. "Tagallang" was an old KAGAN God in which at this juncture is still being worshipped by the MANSAKA and MANDAYA tribes.
Christianity has been embraced by those KAGANS who lived in front of the Pacific (An area were Spaniards first landed at Davao region). Those groups did not fight against the Spaniards when they were being invaded and later were forced to embrace Christianity. Some KAGANS were Islamized when Shariffs from Maguindanao and Jolo came to Davao. They introduced Islam to KAGANS and those who had accepted it were called as KALAGANS. |
